Photography
Rock’n Roll!!! Or Business. Or Portaits. 😉
Jana Kaiser is an accomplished German-American photographer who has published and exhibited extensively worldwide. After assisting Bob Gruen in NYC in the late 80s she combined her passion for music and photography, traveling the globe photographing some of the most famous rock, blues and pop musicians of our time. Living also in Paris, San Francisco and Colorado, she developed a thriving career as a portrait artist photographing actors, athletes, families and community leaders.
“I got my very first camera when I was 11! It won it at one of those spin the wheel thingies that they had set up on some busy shopping street way back in my hometown of Lübeck. First prize! A small and cheap point-and-shoot Kodak. I patiently waited to take my very first photograph with it, a portrait of my mother. She had had a brain aneurysm and was in the hospital for over one year. I still have that photograph.
The camera doesn’t make the photographer, that’s for sure. In my professional life I have always been a Nikon Girl. When I was teaching kids, we mostly used little point-and-shoot digital cameras. It’s the moment, the implementation of the vision, the framing, the story behind it that trumps a sharp yet soulless image.
Man, would I have loved a digital camera back in those Rock’n Roll days! The amount of time and money I could have saved and the amount of images I would have produced without worrying about the cost of film and developing. But then again. My files are so huge already, who needs all those millions of pictures of popstars anyway, eh?!”

The 2000
A different kinda Rock’n Roll
After the birth of my second child I felt ready to get back behind the lens professionally. Having left behind the big cities for a life in the Colorado Mountains I had to find new subjects. I did. I made my life as a Portrait Photographer just as exciting, except I traded my late nights for early mornings.
This was a Rock’n Roll kinda HS Senior Session.Â
The 90s
More Rock’n Roll
Moving from Paris to New York, to San Francisco exposed me to all types of Music. My taste has always been eclectic. I thought it was a luxury being a photographer and enjoying all kinds of sounds, and if not that, maybe the show was exciting to photograph. Also. Good music is good music is good music.
The 80s
Rock’n Roll
Lenny Kravitz was my first ever photopass. I still have it. Before I had snuck my cameras into venues, now with my first published image of Nick Cave in The New York Times, I was officially a Rock’n Roll Photographer!
I love music, I love the lifestyle – a bit too much there for a little while – I love to travel and loved being in the darkroom watching my visions come to life.
I love Rock’n Roll, and Rap, and Blues and Pop and and and.
It’s all just Rock’n Roll!
